The Extinction Index

Made for my Interaction Design class, The Extinction Index is a website dedicated to educate young students on bird extinction between the 19th and 21st centuries. For this project I researched and collected data on 100 extinct bird species, sorting it through 7 metadata categories. This research informs the design of the site while encouraging students to draw relationships between each metadata category.

In additon to the website, users can buy a card set for students, teachers, and families interested in teaching young students about animal extiction and biodiversity away from computer screens.

Created using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Google Sheets and Figma.

Two Ways to View

When browsing The Extinction Index, users can view each bird species through gallery or single view. In the single view UI, users can hover over each bird species, revealing additional information unique to each bird.

Sort Through Data Quickly

Using collected data, I created a filterable data visualisation for students to compare and contrast different bird species through 7 different metadata categories, notably: Scientific Classification (Family), Bird Location, Century of Extiction, and the Reason for Extinction.

Buy Physical Cards

For students and families looking to learn away from their computer screens, The Cards of Extinction are a solution. Through their profile, users can shop their liked cards, or buy the whole collection.
