Campus Nature Areas
Campus Nature Areas is a collaborative signage and brand system design project created to improve the visibility of nature area entrances on the campus of Michigan State University. Focusing on the Sanford Nature Area, we hoped to improve the appearance of each entrance by creating an identifiable system that clarified the area for students. This system includes signage outside and inside the nature area, painted fences, benches, and trashcans for visitors. Finally, we chose to implement branding that wasn’t site specific to the Sanford Nature Area, but rather to all nature areas across campus, creating a standard system that is widely adaptable.

Created with Adobe Illustrator, Indesign, and Photoshop.
Campus Nature Areas Brand System
The Campus Nature Areas Brand System is composed of various parts, notably:- One logo with two color variations.
- One color palette composed of secondary and primary color palettes.
- One header font (Bebas Neue).
- One body copy font (Metropolis).
- One map of Sanford Nature Area.
- Varied fence, entrance, and internal navigation signage.
- Color-coordinated trash cans and wood benches.
These design decisions were created from research my partner and I conducted when walking around and through Sanford Nature Area. All exterior signage was created to draw the attention of passersby. Furthermore, the secondary color palette was created to distinguish each entrance by color. The trashcans and benches situated at all nature area entrances were added to address the large amount of trash in the nature area and give visitors the ability to sit down after taking a walk. Finally, interior signage was created to help guide visitors throughout the nature area.
